Tragedy Strikes: Officer Dead, Two Injured During Attempt to Remove Woman’s Son – What Went Wrong

Routine Eviction Turns Deadly in Florida
Authorities in Indian River County, Florida, are investigating a tragic incident that began as a routine eviction call. What was expected to be a standard procedure turned into a deadly confrontation, leaving a sheriff’s deputy dead and another injured.

Deputy Terri Mashkow Killed in Gunfire
On Friday, November 21, Deputy Terri Mashkow, 47, lost her life while attempting to remove a woman’s son, Michael Halberstam, from his Vero Beach home. Another deputy was wounded in the shoulder, and a locksmith also suffered injuries.

Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers described the tragedy during a press conference: “What an awful day, six days before Thanksgiving. This was a standard call for service—regular duties that our deputies bravely perform.”

Incident Unfolds
Mashkow, another deputy, and a locksmith approached Halberstam’s residence to serve an eviction notice at his mother’s request. Authorities say Halberstam suddenly retrieved a firearm and opened fire. The deputies returned fire, striking him multiple times.

Officials confirmed that Mashkow died in the line of duty. The second deputy is recovering in the hospital and is expected to fully heal. Flowers said he spoke with the injured deputy personally.

Suspect’s Troubled Background
Halberstam initially survived the shooting but later died from his injuries on November 23. Authorities revealed he had a criminal record, including narcotics-related charges and a misdemeanor assault.

Investigators have not yet determined why his mother initiated the eviction. They also noted that Halberstam had posted concerning messages online, some critical of law enforcement. Officials are still reviewing whether these posts played a role in the shooting.

Multi-Agency Investigation Underway
Several agencies are involved in the ongoing investigation. Authorities expect to remain at the scene for an extended period as they piece together the events that led to the deadly confrontation.

Officials Respond
State leaders expressed condolences and support for law enforcement.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said, “The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is working with the sheriff and the local community. We hope for the best results of that investigation.”

Attorney General James Uthmeier added on X, “We are praying for the brave officers who put their lives on the line to protect Florida and our families.”

Honoring a Fallen Deputy
In recognition of her service, the sheriff’s office posthumously promoted Mashkow to sergeant, now referred to as Sergeant Sweeting-Mashkow. Funeral details will be announced once arrangements are finalized.

Family Remembers Mashkow
Mashkow’s family shared heartfelt tributes. Her cousin, Joan Bennett, described her as a determined and generous person. “We’re all in shock. She was a sweetheart and loved her dogs,” Bennett said.

Mashkow also raised a teenage daughter and stepson while fully dedicating herself to her law enforcement career. Bennett emphasized, “She was a loyal, beautiful person who cared about her community and family.”

When asked what made Mashkow proudest, Bennett said, “Helping the community, even when she wasn’t on duty.” Her husband remembered her as “an amazing woman with a heart of gold.”

Legacy of Service
Deputy Mashkow’s impact resonates both within her community and her family. Her dedication, compassion, and bravery will be remembered long after her untimely death.
