Zohran Mamdani Faces Backlash After Election Win
Newly elected New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing criticism following his victory over Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa.
After declaring, “Thank you, New York City. Together we made history. Now let’s get to work,”
Mamdani posted a video on X urging donations from “working class” residents to fund his transition team, hire policy experts, and build infrastructure.
The appeal drew backlash online, with users mocking the timing of his request.
One wrote, “It’s been less than 24 hours since Mamdani won & he’s already asking for money.”
Others accused him of hypocrisy, calling him “already begging for money. What a joke.”
Liberal commentator Van Jones also criticized Mamdani’s fiery victory speech, describing a “character switch” from his calm campaign persona.
“That warm, open, embracing guy was not there tonight,” Jones said, adding that Mamdani missed a chance to unite skeptical voters.
With 50.4% of the vote, Mamdani declared victory, saying, “I am young. I am Muslim.
I am a democratic socialist… and I refuse to apologize for any of this.” He called his win “a mandate for change” in New York City.
