Earthquake Leaves More Than 60 Dead, Rescuers Race Against Time

BREAKING: The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck the Philippines has risen to at least 60, according to AFP reports.

Rescue operations are underway after a shallow 6.9-magnitude quake shook the central island of Cebu late Tuesday night, devastating communities and toppling buildings. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed the tremor hit at 9:59 pm (1359 GMT) near Bogo City, home to around 90,000 residents.

Authorities say at least 31 people were confirmed dead in Cebu, with dozens more fatalities reported in surrounding areas. Officials warn the number is expected to climb as rescuers dig through collapsed homes, shops, and schools in search of survivors.

Eyewitnesses described the ground shaking violently, sending people fleeing into the streets as walls cracked and roofs gave way. Power outages and damaged roads have further complicated rescue efforts, leaving many communities cut off and desperate for aid.
