Plane Cr.a.sh in North Carolina Claims Lives of Family of Four – What We Know So Far

Tragedy Near Destination
A North Carolina family of four tragically lost their lives on July 7, 2025, when their plane crashed just one mile from its destination. The single-engine Cirrus SR22T went down in a field near Raleigh Executive Jetport in Lee County.

The vic.tims were identified as Travis Buchanan, 35, his wife Candace Buchanan, 35, and their two children. They were returning home to Sanford from a beach trip in Florida.

Final Moments and Investigation
According to Aviation Accident Investigator Ryan Enders, the aircraft departed from Merritt Island, Florida. Before cr*shing, the pilot contacted the airport’s fixed-base operator, reporting issues with the engine, navigation system, and communication.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation. The wreckage will be moved to Tennessee for further analysis. Officials will also review the pilot’s flight history and the 72 hours leading up to the crash.

Heartfelt Tributes from the Community
The Buchanan family was deeply rooted in their community. They owned Buchanan Farms in Sanford, known for its produce stand and community events. Tributes flooded in from friends, neighbors, and colleagues.

Grace Christian Sanford, the children’s school, shared touching memories on social media:

“So blessed for the daily hugs from sweet Aubrey, and the honor to teach Walker,” wrote Kirstin Schwader.

Tammy Strickland called it “heartbreaking,” saying, “What a privilege it was to know this wonderful family.”

Maci Bullard, who taught both children in kindergarten, said, “My heart is broken over this tragic loss.”

Remembering the Buchanans
Longtime employee Abraham Garcia shared that Travis Buchanan was always ready to help. The two had worked side by side for eight years. Local business owner Michael Yarborough, who sourced strawberries from the farm, remembered Travis for his kindness and integrity.

“They were building a safe, healthy space for their family and the community,” said Andrea Adame of Los Charros Mexican Restaurant.

Photographer Nickie Runyan added, “Their events brought people together. That was their true goal.”

The family had even planned a charity event for the upcoming weekend. Now, their loved ones are focused on grieving and honoring their memory.

Another Tragedy Days Earlier in Ohio
Just days before the Buchanans’ crash, another plane went down in Trumbull County, Ohio. On June 29, 2025, a twin-engine Cessna 441 cr*shed into the woods shortly after takeoff from Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport. All six aboard d**d.

Vic.ti.ms Identified
The victims included:

James Weller Jr. (67)

Veronica Weller (68)

John Weller (36)

Maria Weller (34)

Pilot Joseph Maxin (63)

Co-pilot Timothy Blake (55)

The crash occurred just minutes after takeoff, around 6:53 a.m. The aircraft made a left turn, then slammed into the woods near Howland Township.

Legacy of the Wellers
The Weller family had strong ties to the region. James Jr. was president and CEO of Liberty Steel Industries, a company his father founded. They were also heavily involved in racing at Sharon Speedway.

“Jim won 36 times in the Big-Block Modified division and was a two-time champion,” the speedway shared on Facebook.

Survivors include Jimmy Weller III, a former NASCAR racer, and his mother Ronnie Weller.

Honoring Pilot Maxin
Pilot Joseph Maxin was a respected flight instructor and former prosecutor. Mahoning County Prosecutor Lynn Maro praised him for his long public service career and warm personality.

The NTSB has opened an investigation into this cr*sh as well.
